The scholarly study of the history, symbolism, etiquette, design, manufacture, and other aspects of flags is known as Vexillology (from the Latin vexillum, "banner"). Such studies are encouraged by many publications and the International Federation of Vexillological Associations and its members.
Heraldry on the other hand spread from the use of symbolic devices which were identifications in the 13th century and soon spread to corporations and institutions. The principle device for displaying the heraldic symbols was the shield.
Although different, Vexillology and Heraldry embrace the study and understanding of ancient and modern symbols. To the casual reader, an immediate application of finding the family coat of arms or the flag or banner held by distant generations, comes to mind. Now you are hooked on genealogy too. Great!

Flags of Native Peoples of the United States.
The white men from Europe were not the original owners or occupiers of North America. Therefore a study of our native American peoples, their flags, customs and how we usurpers literally owe our existence to them must and should be explored.
No, not just another holiday, nor a shallow observance, but a very special day to learn, participate and relive a tradition which make us whom we are - Americans.
